Ask a rep – How can I convince my parents to let me live on campus?

Parents often worry about how their teens will do living on campus, but you can convince them to let you with these tips.

Ask a rep – How can I convince my parents to let me live on campus?

Q: My parents want me to live at home. How can I convince them the dorm is OK?

A: So your parents want you to live at home but you don’t want to? Don’t worry about it. Most parents initially feel this way, but they end up changing their minds. Part of the change of heart is that first they have to come to grips with the fact that you’re growing up and want to be independent. There isn’t much you can do about this but show them that you can be trustworthy. So don’t go out partying, or arrive home late, or get in trouble. Then your parents won’t ever let you out of their sight, so be responsible.

At any rate, have your parents somewhat involved in your college selection process. That way, they will feel like they know what your doing and they’ll feel included.

Once you’ve decided on some of the schools you will apply to, take a campus tour and have your parents join you. During a tour, both you and your parents will be able to see the dorm rooms and the rest of campus. Also, they can ask any questions they would like. Usually, the tour guide is a current student at the college who would be able to offer some insight about the dorms.

If this doesn’t work, convince your parents to let you participate in an overnight program. At that time, you would stay in the residence hall with a student host, attend classes, eat in the dining hall and attend campus events.

When you return home in one piece with wonderful and exciting stories, maybe then your parents will then see how happy you are, and that it wasn’t that bad having you gone.

If all else fails, remind them how much time they’ll have to spend together without you hanging around!
