Methodist University

Chartered November 1, 1956 as a senior, coeducational liberal arts college. Was established as a joint venture by the citizens of Fayetteville/Cumberland County and the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Methodist College opened to students in the fall of 1960. In the Fall of 2006, in conjunction with the institution's 50th anniversary celebration, Methodist College officially became Methodist University. Click here for the historical highlights from the University's first 50 years.

The University today serves approximately 2,300 students—1,700 in the day program, 300 in Methodist University at Night, and 300 in graduate programs. The student/faculty ratio is 12:1. Average class size is around 15 students. The student body includes persons of diverse ages and nationalities, representing 40 states, the District of Columbia, and 77 foreign countries. Approximately 40% of our students come from out of state. Almost $24 million of institutional scholarships and grants were awarded to our students last year.

Academic Life

Today the University offers bachelor's degrees in over 80 fields of study (majors and concentrations) including communications, justice studies, business administration, education, and social work. New majors, minors, and concentrations recently added include engineering, entrepreneurship, applied forensic science, graphic design, and applied communiation. The University offers over 80 undergraduate majors and concentrations, six graduate programs, 20 varsity sports, and a myriad of student activities. Our undergraduate degree programs build on strong foundations in the liberal arts and prepare graduates to succeed graduate or professional programs or in rich, fulfilling careers.

Campus Life

The 617-acre campus includes 50 buildings, an 18-hole golf course, football/track facility, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, outdoor volleyball and basketball courts, and an amphitheater. Click here to view the campus map.

The University can house 1,170 students in its 19 residence halls. All residence halls include air conditioning, free cable TV, laundry facilities, and Internet access. All freshmen are a part of a First Year Experience Program.

Athletics / Sports

The University is a NCAA Division III member offering 20 intercollegiate sports. The University competes in the USA South Athletic Conference. Several years ago, the University formed the Methodist University Monarch Booster Club and the Methodist University Athletic Hall of Fame.
