Texas, Oklahoma and California Scholarships

Looking for free money for college? We’ve put together a list of scholarships from tons of colleges. Many of these scholarships are merit-based—which means your outstanding grades and test scores can qualify you to win!

Austin College–Sherman, Texas

Scholarship: Presidential Scholarship
Amount: Full tuition for four years
Award details: Awarded to incoming freshmen. Based on superior academic achievement, scholarly motivation and extracurricular involvement. Competitive candidates typically rank in the top 5 percent of their class and have SAT or ACT scores at the 97th percentile or higher. Finalists will be announced and invited to campus for our Scholarship Finalist Day in late February/early March, where finalists will participate in individual interviews with the Scholarship Committee. Recipients will be announced via mail by mid-March.

Scholarship: Dean’s Scholarship
Amount: $18,000 per year for four years
Award details: No additional scholarship application required. Students who wish to be considered for general academic scholarships must indicate such on The Common Application when applying for admission to Austin College. Students completing all admission materials by the Early Action II deadline receive priority consideration.

Scholarship: Posey Leadership Institute Scholarship
Amount: $19,000
Award details: Awarded to up to 15 incoming freshmen admitted into the Posey Leadership Institute. Competitive candidates will have clearly demonstrated leadership ability and have distinguished themselves in the classroom as well. Finalists will be announced and invited to campus for our Scholarship Finalist Day in late February/early March, where finalists will participate in individual interviews with the Scholarship Committee. New student recipients will be announced via mail by mid-March. Up to five rising sophomore Austin College students are also selected each year to join the program and to receive this scholarship.

Midwestern State University–Wichita Falls, Texas

Scholarship: President’s Distinguished Scholars Program
Amount: $3,000 per year, renewable
Award details: Must apply as a beginning freshmen. Application deadline is March 1.

Scholarship: MSU Admissions General Merit
Amount: $1,000
Award details: Award dependent on applicant pool, entrance exam scores and class rank. Deadline is March 1.

Scholarship: Phi Theta Kappa
Amount: $1,000
Award details: Must be a member of PTK and must enroll directly from a community college. Deadline is March 1.

National University

Scholarship: Promising Scholar Award
Amount: $1,341
Award details: This scholarship award is intended for students who are enrolling into National University directly from a California community college. Students must be in good academic standing at the community college at the time of application to National University. Request an application through the National University Regional Recruitment Specialist, Transfer Center at their school, or through a National University Admissions Advisor.

Scholarship: Transfer to Triumph Scholarship—California Community College Scholarships
Amount: $2,742
Award details: Students who are transferring from a California community college may be eligible for the Transfer to Triumph program. To be eligible, a student must: be in good academic standing at the time of application to National University; have completed at least 30 semester units at a California community college or combination of California community colleges; their last semester of attendance was at a California community college and is within 24 months of their application date to National University. Initiate elibility confirmation through your admissions advisor.

Scholarship: Community Scholarship
Amount: Varies
Award details: The purpose of the community scholarship is to recognize outstanding performance in the workplace, professional organizations and community colleges.

Oklahoma Baptist University—Shawnee, Okla.

Amount: Full tuition
Details: These full-tuition scholarships are awarded to students who have at least a 32 ACT or 1420 SAT and a 3.75 GPA. Qualified students will be asked to submit supporting documents including an essay, résumé and letter of recommendation. OBU will invite a group of students to campus to interview for the eight scholarships. Students not selected for an interview or for one of the scholarships automatically qualify for a $9,000 Academic Scholarship.

Scholarship: Founder’s Academic Scholarship
Amount: $9,000 per year
Details: Renewable for four years with a minimum GPA of 3.00.

Scholarship: Trustee’s Academic Scholarship
Amount: $7,000 per year
Details: Renewable for four years with a minimum GPA of 3.00.

Scholarship: President’s Academic Scholarship
Amount: $6,000 per year
Details: Renewable for four years with a minimum GPA of 2.80.

Southeastern Oklahoma State University–Durant, Okla.

Scholarship: Regent’s Tuition Waiver
Amount: $900-$2,400
Details: This is a tuition scholarship for Oklahoma residents only. Apply online. Application deadline March 1.

Scholarship: President’s Leadership Class
Amount: $3,200 (Oklahoma residents); 100% non-resident tuition waiver and $1,980 room scholarship (nonresidents)
Details: Demonstrate outstanding leadership in extracurricular activities. Demonstrate involvement in the community. Complete and submit the PLC Application. Application deadline January 31.

Scholarship: Southeastern Honors Program
Amount: $1,600-$9,635 per year
Details: Must have ACT composite of 25 or SAT of 1130 or higher, from National Test Date. Complete Honors Program Application. Application deadline is January 31.

Southern Nazarene University–Bethany, Okla.

Scholarship: Academic Scholarships
Amount: $1,000-$24,000 per year
Details: Based on cumulative GPA and ACT/SAT test scores.

Scholarship: Church Matching Scholarships
Amount: $1,000 per year
Details: If your local church sends $250, we match it with $750!

Scholarship: Talent based (music and athletic)
Amount: $500-$24,000
Details: Call for a music audition or to meet with a coach.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University–Weatherford and Sayre, Okla.

Scholarship: Various academic scholarships
Amount: $300-$8,600 per year
Details: Awards range from a guaranteed salutatorian scholarship of $300 a year to a full-tuition scholarship, room scholarship and cash stipend of $3,000 per year.

Scholarship: Residence Hall Scholarship
Amount: $1,600 a year
Details: Up to 8 semesters for a free residence hall room for scoring a 28 or greater on the ACT (1250 SAT).

Scholarship: Nonresident Tuition Scholarship
Amount: $6,400 a year
Details: Guaranteed for first-time SWOSU students who meet regular admission criteria.

Stephen F. Austin State University – Nacogdoches, Texas

Scholarship: Academic Excellence Scholarship
Amount: $3,000 per year
Details: Rank in the top 10 percent of graduating class, or rank in the top quarter of graduating class and earn a minimum score of 1100 on the SAT (reading and math) or 24 on the ACT (writing not included). No separate application required.

Scholarship: Regents Scholarship
Amount: $3,000 per semester for on-campus housing
Details: Deadline is February 1. Must be admitted to SFA as a new incoming freshman and be in the top 15% of their class, or have a minimum SAT score of 1220 or 27 ACT score (writing not included). Must present evidence of successful activities outside the academic classroom.

Scholarship: All other scholarships
Amount: $100-$8,000 per year, renewable
Details: SFA and the SFA Alumni Foundation have hundreds of scholarships available to new and returning students. Some are based on merit while others are need-based. Scholarships requiring audition(s) or tryout(s) are also available. Criteria which may be used to determine recipients include class rank, high school or college GPA, scores on the ACT or SAT, leadership activities, and performance.

Texas A&M University-Commerce—Commerce, Texas

Scholarship: Freshman Scholarships
Amount: $4,000-$10,000
Details: Must have a minimum ACT score of 23 or a minimum SAT score of 1050 (reading and math). Scholarship award amounts are based on the actual test score and will be disbursed over a four-year period. To retain the scholarship for a four-year period, students must remain enrolled full time with a 3.0 minimum semester/cumulative GPA. Scholarship: Transfer Scholarships/Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships
Amount: $2,000-$6,000
Details: To be eligible for a transfer scholarship, students must have a minimum of 30 transferable hours. To be eligible for a PTK scholarship, students must have a minimum of 45 transferable hours and submit a copy of their PTK certificate. Scholarship award amounts are disbursed over a 2-year period, and students must remain enrolled full time with a 3.0 minimum semester/cumulative GPA. Scholarship: General/departmental scholarships
Amount: Varies; $500-$5,000

Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi—Corpus Christi, Texas

Scholarship: Presidential Top Scholar
Amount: $32,000 ($8,000 a year for four years)
Details: Deadline is December 1. Must be in top 15% of class and have a minimum 24 ACT score or 1100 SAT score (without writing).

Scholarship: Presidential Finalist Scholar
Amount: $16,000 ($4,000 a year for four years)
Details: Deadline is December 1. Must be in top 15% of class and have a minimum ACT score of 24 or SAT score of 1100 (without writing).

Scholarship: Presidential Scholarship
Amount: $12,000 ($3,000 a year for four years)
Details: Deadline is December 1. Must be in top 15% of class and have a minimum ACT score of 24 or SAT score of 1100 (without writing).

Texas Wesleyan University—Fort Worth, Texas

Scholarship: Freshman non-competitive merit scholarships
Amount: Up to $2,000-$9,000 per academic year
Details: Must have minimum 2.5 GPA, SAT score of 920 or ACT score of 19.

Scholarship: Valedictorian/Salutatorian Award
Amount: Up to full tuition
Details: Must be valedictorian/salutatorian of graduating class of the preceding academic year from high school.

Scholarship: Competitive Freshman Scholarships
Amount: Up to one-half tuition to full tuition
Details: Must have minimum 3.8 GPA and SAT score of 1200 or ACT score of 27.

University of Houston-Clear Lake—Houston, Texas

Scholarship: Automatic Transfer Scholarship
Amount: $800 or $1,000; varies based on requirements met
Details: Must have a transfer GPA of 2.75 or higher. For first-time UHCL undergraduate students eligible for in-state tuition. Must enroll in at least nine credit hours each semester. Can be renewed for an additional year if GPA requirements are met.

Scholarship: Dollars for Scholars
Amount: $1,000; also waives out-of-state tuition for nonresident recipients
Details: For degree-seeking graduate students or an undergraduate student who does not qualify for in-state tuition. Must enroll in a minimum of six credit hours per semester.

Scholarship: Celebrating our Elders
Amount: $200-$2,000
Details: Must be a high school senior intending to enroll in a Houston-area community college, a dual-enrollment student, or a student currently enrolled in a Houston-area community college.

University of the Incarnate Word—San Antonio, Texas

Scholarship: Presidential Scholarship
Amount: $12,000, renewable
Details: Average profile of recipient: 3.88 GPA, 1214 SAT (math/verbal) or 26 ACT.

Scholarship: Dean’s Scholarship
Amount: $10,000, renewable
Details: Average profile of recipient: 3.73 GPA, 1082 SAT (math/verbal) or 23 ACT.

Scholarship: Distinguished Scholar Award
Amount: $8,000, renewable
Details: Average profile of recipient: 3.55 GPA, 956 SAT (math/verbal) or 20 ACT.

The University of Texas at Arlington—Arlington, Texas

Scholarship: President’s Charter
Amount: $8,000 per year
Details: Must have minimum 1300 SAT score (critical reading and math) or 29 ACT score and be in top 10% of class or have a minimum 3.5 GPA.

Scholarship: Outstanding Freshman
Amount: $6,000 per year
Details: Must have minimum 1200 SAT score (critical reading and math) or 26 ACT score and be in top 20% of class.

Scholarship: Top 50% Award
Amount: $4,000 per year
Details: Must have minimum 1200 SAT score (critical reading and math) or 26 ACT and be in the top 50% of class at a Texas public high school.

The University of Texas at El Paso

Scholarship: President’s Leadership Scholarship
Amount: $24,000 (annual award of $6,000, renewable)
Details: UTEP’s newest and most selective award for incoming freshmen awarded to valedictorians and salutatorians of high schools in the El Paso, Socorro and Ysleta Independent School Districts.

Scholarship: Scholars Excellence Program—Excellence or Presidential
Amount: $16,000 or $12,000 (annual award of $4,000 or $3,000, renewable)
Details: Students must meet two of these requirements: a high school GPA of at least 96.0, rank in top 3% of graduating class, and score at least 1220 on SAT math and reading OR at least 27 on ACT. Excellence Scholars must also display exceptional leadership abilities and achievements.

Scholarship: Scholars Excellence Program—Academic Scholarship
Amount: $6,000 (annual award of $1,500, renewable)
Details: Students must have a high school GPA of at least 93.0, rank in top 10% of graduating class, and score at least 1120 on SAT math and reading OR at least 24 on ACT.
