Academic Life

MVCC strives to help all students pursue personalized education, complete with the latest technologies, tutoring, advisement, job placement, and transfer services. Students can choose from more than 90 majors, including fine and graphic arts, business, digital animation, engineering, allied health, hospitality, education, criminal justice, human services, technologies and trades. Many programs are enhanced by agreements with four-year colleges, so all or most credits transfer. All students must fulfill the Diversity/Global View requirement for graduation, which is fundamental to MVCC’s commitment to raising student awareness of their increasingly diverse, globalized environment.

Campus Life

There are many ways to get involved in the MVCC campus community, with more than 50 student-run clubs and organizations tailored to a variety of academic subject areas and interests. MVCC’s Cultural Series brings a variety of entertainment, including musicians, comedians, magicians, movies, and dancers, to its state-of-the-art theaters and venues in Utica and Rome. MVCC also offers one of the most extensive, diverse, and successful two-year college intercollegiate athletic programs in the country. Sports include baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, hockey, indoor track, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. And the Hawks are winners, with 21 national team championships!

Facilities and Resources

The Utica Campus has residence halls for more than 500 students. The Academic Building houses classrooms, computer labs, fine arts studios, and labs for nursing, respiratory care and physics. Payne Hall houses a library, Student Service Center and faculty and administrative offices. The Alumni College Center serves as the hub of Student Activities and contains rec rooms, dining halls, bookstore, and the Health Center. The Robert R. Jorgensen Athletics/Events Center houses a main gymnasium, field house with athletic courts and fitness center, and swimming pool. The Rome Campus Academic Building includes classrooms, labs, bookstore, instructional kitchen, and restaurant-style dining room. The Plumley Science and Technology Complex houses a library, learning center, classrooms, student services offices, and an auditorium. MVCC also operates an Aviation Training Center at Griffiss Park in Rome.

Athletics / Sports

Athletes must be enrolled as full-time students at MVCC and must have a physical examination specific for athletic competition on file prior to tryouts, practice and competition. In order to maintain eligibility, certain requirements must be met. Consult with the Director of Athletics for eligibility requirements.

Financial Aid / Tuition

MVCC’s Financial Aid Office is available to assist students and families through the financial aid process. Computers are available to enable students to access all federal and state services online. Scholarship information is also available through the MVCC Foundation, which last year awarded more than 450 scholarships to MVCC students.

Admission

MVCC is an open-admissions institution, which does not require that applicants compete for space based on past performance, superior grades or standardized test scores. Many of our programs, however, have prerequisite requirements. If applicants do not possess the appropriate prerequisite background, it may be recommended that they begin the college program in an alternate major or they may be required to take remedial courses equivalent to those entry prerequisites.
