Academic Life

Genesee Community College offers more than 60 academic programs and certificates, and is continuously assessing future job markets for the careers of tomorrow. Among the most recent programs GCC introduced are E-Commerce, Event Planning, Fashion Design, Golf Management and the 100% online Supply Chain Management. Perhaps most striking about GCC’s academic life are the small, classes with personal attention from instructors, and the high-tech learning environment. While many students seamlessly transfer their GCC / SUNY credits for a bachelor’s (or higher) degree, others are advancing their skill set for immediate employment and using GCC’s hands-on learning opportunities and the dynamic co-op program to get there. Students needing assistance find GCC’s free tutoring at the Center for Academic Progress advantageous.

Campus Life

No matter what your interests are - there is likely a student club or organization available to quench and expand your interests… while making new friends along the way! As Forum Players Theatre group produce full-production performances each year, GCC’s Fine Art students professionally exhibit their work each spring in the Roz Steiner Art Gallery.  Eleven athlete teams compete in NJCAA sports, often with the Cougar Cheer and Dance Team entertaining spectators. The annual ECO-Fest offers a springtime celebration of Earth Day. And, there are also more than two dozen academic clubs, blogging opportunities, with the TV Club and WGCC rounding out the Campus life. As the director of Student Activities commonly states: “If there isn’t a student club that interests you at GCC – we want you to start one up!”

Facilities and Resources

Genesee Community College has won awards for the safety, cleanliness and the maintenance of its facilities. The main campus features a ‘mall-like’ structure with all facilities including the gym, aquatic center, library, student union, art gallery, theatre and classrooms interconnected —allowing  students and staff to dart to and from classes, meetings and events without going outside.  Yet outside the grounds feature newly renovated baseball and softball diamonds, a new turf soccer and lacrosse stadium, lit tennis courts and a woodland nature trail. Adjacent to the Batavia (main) Campus is College Village, a student residence community offering one and two-bedroom apartment suites accommodating more than 400 students. Most importantly, students appreciate GCC’s high-tech learning environment with ‘smart’ classrooms and Wi-Fi across campus and 26 computer labs.

Athletics / Sports

Genesee Community College athletics program provides a quality and competitive intercollegiate experience consistent with the National Junior Collegiate Athletics Association (NJCAA) philosophy and the overall educational mission of GCC. There are 12 teams, specifically baseball and softball; men and women’s basketball, soccer and lacrosse; women’s volleyball; golf; swimming and diving; and cheerleading.  In addition, GCC has unique academic programs that are perfect for those interested in sport careers. The AAS degree in Fitness and Recreation Management features two concentrations: Golf Management and Personal Trainer. There is also Sport Management Studies and Physical Education Studies. Not to be overlooked are GCC’s many intramural programs, the open gym, fitness and aquatics center which collectively provides students with a variety of recreational activities to maintain physical health and enable friendships outside of class.

Financial Aid / Tuition

Approximately 80% of Genesee Community College students receive some form of financial aid. In fact, GCC typically awards between $18 and $25 million in financial aid annually and also more than $250,000 in scholarships. The staff at the Financial Aid office and at each campus center is available to assist students of all ages and their families through the application process, which usually begins with completing the free FAFSA form.

2014 Tuition:  $3,700 full-time, in-state

Part of the prestigious SUNY (State University of New York) system, Genesee Community College is a public, open-admission, student-centered institution dedicated to providing access to educational experiences that promote intellectual and social growth to all who apply. The application is free, and applicants do not compete for space based on past performance, grades or standardized test scores. Many of GCC’s programs, however, do have prerequisite requirements and those applicants do not possess the appropriate prerequisite background will be encouraged to  consider an alternative major or take remedial courses to prepare them for the entry requirements.
