10 things they don’t tell you about choosing a major
10 things they don’t tell you about choosing a major
You don’t have to choose a major to get into college, and other things you’ve got to know

1.
It’s your chance to become an
expert on a topic
.
2.
Make sure you love the field!
Don’t declare a major yet if you’re on the fence.
3.
Try not to change your mind
about your major once you declare; some classes might not transfer to your new degree program.
4.
You don’t have to choose a major right away.
You will probably have until the end of sophomore/beginning of junior year!
5.
Get your college’s
general education requirements out of the way
first if you’re unsure about what to declare. Those classes can also help you find a major you enjoy.
6.
Think about what you really want to do,
not what your parents or your counselors think you should do.
7.
Shop around freshman year
to see which classes you like, and use those likes to narrow your choices.
8.
Your major doesn’t always
automatically lead to a correlating career.
9.
Being undecided
likely won’t affect whether or not you get accepted into a college.
10. Consider a minor or a double major
if you can’t decide among subjects. Or, study one subject as an undergrad and one topic in graduate school.
