ha ha, omg, i just joined this site i think 3 days ago, and i am so psyched to see people who love writing as much as i do!! writing for me is just so personal, it makes things more clear, and its a way for me to expel all of my excess emotions and all of the drama that is HS. But writing IS a career as many people have said here. You just have to be flexible. You can even get a job, and so sorry i dont know what its called, but you get writing assignments and you have a due date (kind of like school) and you write it in your own time, and then just give it in to your boss when the due date has come. my mom told me about that, she said that some newspapers and magazines have certain sections where thats what those authors do. just remember, that there is always a way, you just have to know where to look. I agree with what everyone has said about writing. Writing allows you to freely express yourself with no rules and it's in your own personal domain! I LOVE writing how I feel in poetry and sometimes I write little mini stories about my personal experiences.

So I guess what I'm saying a Big hand to all those who love to write!

I know what you're saying. My mom says the same thing.
I've only been writing for a year and a half, though...
And, woah, have I come a long way...
aaaaaaanyways, my mom doesn't think I can make it as a writer, even though my dad's behind me 100% (and I've never lived with him)
Not many people in my family have made it all the way through college, my mom and dad included. In fact, my dad never even graduated, but he's smarter than my mom on a lot of subjects. The closest person (age-wise) that's graduated, is my cousin Larry.
And I've gotten so many bad reviews from my friends, and my teachers give me good ones for the same things, but when I go online and post it, I get mixed results, and... Am I babbling again?

And writing is a career, no matter how you look at it. Maybe start writing as a side thing, until you get published, that is if you do. (not like you won't, I might even get published this summer [yay]) And you don't even need to major in writing, in fact, I can name a couple of writers I like who weren't trained primarily in writing.
(that'd be Chris Crutcher *psychology* and Kathy Reichs *physical anthropology from Northwestern*)

Is it me, or do I suck at explaining things?

unless it's math related... hm...

Wait, what was I saying? (sorry, attention disorder... guess I didn't take my meds!)

Right... It's all up to you!

-GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR WRITING!

Diddo.
Aye, there's only so much you can do with writing unless you're interested in various subjects. Novel writing, poetry, essays, articles, playwriting, biographies, nonfiction, short stories, etc.
I'm working on a play right now, it's going pretty dern well.

HEY! I love writing too! My two older brothers both write and so do my dad and uncle. (I guess it's just in my blood!) Anyway, my whole family has been super supportive and I have to tell you that I know that even if they weren't writing is what I want to do and that you should totally go for it! Look for writing contests to enter and write whenever you can. It will really help.[image]http://www.nextstepmagazine.com/aspplayground/micons/m16.gif[/image] Also see if you can find others in your school or community who love to write and form a writing club where you can read eachother's stuff and offer suggestions and critiques. Hope this helped.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you guys. I don't know if this helps, but when we were applying to colleges, my friend was going to apply as a journalism major, but she wasn't really sure if that was what she wanted. The English department head at our high school told her to start off broad and major in English, and then minor in journalism if she still wanted to do that. I think his advice sounds good: Major in English so you have a good base, and then either double major or pick up a minor in something else related to writing, so you'll have been involved in writing, will have marketable skills, and, if you ever want to switch majors, it's not as if you'll have been studying something so narrow that it won't help you in other areas.

You should get involved in journalism. You can write and do layout. Sometimes it doesn't allow you to be as creative as you want, but it can be fun. You should look into it.
