See, for me, I loved to write since I was eight or nine. One of my many dreams was to become an author of a major crime novel series. I started young; when I was twelve I started my first book. It took me a year to complete, and when I had people read it, they said it was marvelous. One person couldn't put it down. Totally excited, I looked for publishing companies to send it to. Unfortunately, i never got to that step. My confidence fell after reading the book through, trying to edit. The book was horrible! I tried to cram three books' worth of material into two hundred pages. My characters were not developed at all. The formatting was all wrong. And, the book consumed me! Seriously, everwhere I went and everything I saw, I tried to figure out how to fit it into my book.
Thinking I would never, ever make this mistake again, I tried to write another novel. It was shorter, less graphic, but still pure crime. I loved the storyline. However, that failed too. I guess being an author wasn't for me, but the stuff I wrote about inspired me to become a police officer. Now, my dream is to become a homicide detective. I'm preparing myself, too. I'm not rushing into it. I'm attending various programs the local police force puts on, and in one I get a real cop uniform and get to go to the pistol range! I get to ride along with an officer in his car for up to twelve hours--all day or all night. I get to arrest all sorts of drunkards, theives, etc. With each preparation course I attend, my confidence and enthusiasm for the police force inflates.
My advice is: start small, work your way up, and if writing is your passion, GO FOR IT! What good is a passion without being willing to act?
