The father would rather see his own child dead instead of having to deal with the shame the child has brought. How about the mother? She would follow the father. Oh poor child, how can this happen. He did not choose to be this way. Yet, his parents do not understand. This taboo is written in bold, uppercase letters in the book of their culture. Yes, do not commit this sin, for if you do, you will be condemned into forever banishment.
Of course, the child knows of these consequences and thus hides away in the shadows. No one knows of the crime he has committed. The unspeakable crime that society has condemned was not something he chose to commend. His parents love him dearly, but for how long? His friends love him dearly, but for how long? Hence, the child lives in continual fear. This fear is not a fear of the dark, not a fear of heights or serial killers, but the fear of loneliness, solitude.
He uses every second to conceal his crime. Some may suspect that the sin is present. Some may not. The child’s friend had confronted him jokingly. Of course the child denied it, but he was only lying to himself. Throughout that day, that week, that month, that year, he cries. He cries himself to sleep every night. Of course, no one knows how lonely he is, despite the plentiful friends that he has. Oh, how he wanted to confess, but the consequences would be too great for even the toughest person to handle.
So he hides in the closet, waiting to be discovered. The child cries at night at what he has done. His little red pillow acted as a sponge, absorbing the uncontrollable tears that rolled down his cheeks. Yes, he did think of death. He fears rejection from society, his friends, and his family. Oh, but he cannot die. How many people will be hurt by his death? Many, actually. So, he lives on in solitude and calculation.
Cultural taboos are what breaks him inside. How can he do such a thing to his friends and family? The answer is simple; he did nothing wrong. However, society cannot see it and continues to accept him for what he is not. The closet is so lonely and he wants to break free. He has aspirations of education, life, and love. However, once the closet door is open, he cannot close it. Someday he will open the door and enter the light, but for now, he must wait.
If only society forgave him would he not be lonely. In fact, this crime is committed everyday by millions of people. Those millions share the same emotions, but cannot expose themselves for fear of denouncement. Some choose death. Society, how can you do this? What have you done? Those children did not deserve to die. This child will not die. He did not choose this fate, it sort of just happened. He does not know how, when, or why. All he knows is that his happiness will only come once he steps out of the closet and admit to the world of his transgression.
