Blue. What is blue? Is it the color of that brand new sweater that's already stained with tears from the first breaking of a young girl's heart? Or maybe it's the color of the blood running through our veins, pulsing through every fiber of our being. Maybe it's the color of his cloudy eyes that swell with tears as he longs to hold your dying body for just one moment longer. Maybe it's the color of the open sea in which you drown yourself, submerging all the haunting thoughts and aching fears that pierce your soul and grip your throat. Maybe it's the name of that dreadful song that echoes thoughts from memories past of all the lovers come and gone, taking a piece of your fragile youth. Maybe it's the color of the sparkling eye makeup that she smears on her face, determined to hide and erase every fault and flaw visible to the naked eye of her taunting peers. Maybe it's the color of the freshly painted walls in the nursery for a baby boy that will never see the light of day or breathe his first breath. Maybe it's the color of your oldest daughter's car as she drove away that night to endure the greatest gut-wrenching pain her 17-year-old body would ever feel as those awful men took turns robbing her of her innocence. Maybe it's the color of the sparkling hair barrette meant to be worn in your bride's beautiful blonde curls but is, instead, buried beside her lifeless body in the cold, hard casket lying six feet beneath the earth. Or maybe, just maybe, it's the color of your night sky, speckled with haunting reminders of better days that have long gone and become merely distant memories of what was.
