There are many reasons why the character Napoleon from the Animal Farm represents Joseph Stalin from the Russian revolution. Both Stalin and napoleon Have a lust for power, both got rid of their competition by force and both killed those who were considered an opposition. Therefore Napoleon represents Stalin.
Napoleon had an absolute addiction to being the one in control. He is described as “A large fierce-looking Berkshire boar. The only Berkshire on the farm, not too much of a talker, but with a reputation of getting his own way”(11) Being a Berkshire, which generally tend to be a bit aggressive, Napoleon was always or almost always the who got his way. He didn’t do it nicely either. Now Stalin unfortunately gained power by literally killing someone. His quickness to gain power was “beyond what anyone had ever expected” (104). Also Stalin was able to gain power through the use of a very different and dirty strategy, “Overall Stalin demonstrated a combination that none of his rivals possessed, ruthlessness, timing, and the ability to exploit his opponents weaknesses” (104). This literally means that Stalin didn’t play by the rules.
Because Napoleon could barely stand the idea of losing the debate over whether or not to build the wind mill, Napoleon had Snowball chased off the farm. As said in the book,” casting a peculiar look at Snowball, Napoleon uttered a high pitched whimper of a kind no one had heard him utter before. Nine enormous dogs wearing brass- studded collars came bounding into the barn, dashed straight for Snowball, who sprang from his place just in time to escape their snapping jaws. In a moment he was out the door and they were after him.”(37). There was a somewhat similar event with Stalin. He too was running for control over a large group, or in this case a large country. Stalin couldn’t bare the idea of losing to Trotsky, who had been exiled to Mexico for a while; he had an assassin kill him. As was said in the Russian revolution,” the first and most important of the losers was Trotsky whose defeat was sealed by 1925” (104). This is no surprise because Stalin had a criminal record. He worked for a bread bakery.
He wanted to have the position of manager and so he poisoned the manager and took his job as manager. Therefore both Stalin and napoleon gained power by force.
Napoleon felt that his role as leader was in a large amount of jeopardy, so this malignant boar decided he’d execute any who opposed him,” ‘the execution of the traitors this afternoon was the final act, ‘says Squealer”(61). Stalin did the same thing only he had made sure to catch the traitors red handed. As you know” The first and most important loser was Trotsky whose defeat was sealed by 1925,” (104) this too was no surprise because Stalin also had millions of people killed who he feared would cause others to rise up against him in a huge rebellion. Therefore Napoleon and Stalin killed those who were against them.
Both Napoleon and Stalin are considered dictators because of their cruel and bloody tactics which led to their gain of power and helped them keep that power. Their dirty and gory ways of keeping power were the result of a growing paranoia which led them to believe that they were in danger and that they would lose their place as leader. This in turn led to more bloodshed, death and morning. These tactics were mainly used to strike fear into anyone who they thought would turn the others against them. Also there is a question that has had many puzzled for a while now. That question is, we know what happens to Stalin but what on earth happens to Napoleon? We may never find out , but on the other hand you get my point. Therefore Napoleon Represents Stalin.
