With being born during slavery, my grandma Josephine was not given the many educational opportunities that I am given today. Now that I have an equal chance in life to better myself, my grandma pushes me to take advantage of it. She holds the title in my life as the most influential. I have been receiving words of wisdom from her ever since I was an adolescent unknowledgeable of life, and now as a senior in high school they are coming in handy. As a child, if I was not with my mother I was with my grandma Jo. During that time she would tell me stories from her past. The one that has had the biggest impact on me is how she had to begin working at the age of twelve for five dollars a day. Her stories seemed a little unnecessary at the time, but now that I look back on each of the “history lessons” as I would call them, they are greatly appreciated. My grandmother is one of the main reasons why I am so passionate about going to college. She has always been the one to stress the importance of education to me.
As I look over my family, I see a lot of my grandmothers’ grandchildren who should be at a higher level of success than they are. Being the one who has always shared what the value of education could do, and not have it taken advantage of must be a depressing thing. To know of all that someone can accomplish and not have it done because of some incomprehensible reason has to be an inconceivable thing. That is why I made a vow to myself that I would not let my grandmothers’ advice on life and encouraging words be wasted. My grandmother has eleven children which have resulted in many grandchildren and it is upsetting to say, but not even half of them can be looked at as “successful”. I know that when God calls on my grandmother to come home, she wants to leave knowing that each of her loved ones lives an enjoyable life. With that being said, I will gratify my grandmother by completing high school and doing the best I can in college. My grandma Jo has instilled the importance of education in me and that will be seen through my actions during these next few years of my life.
My Grandma Josephine’s life has been a struggle ever since childhood, and if she could just spare me one of the obstacles that she has had to go through she would! That is the reason behind her persistently reminding me of the significance of school and doing the best that I can. I would like to become successful for my own personal reasons, but more to make my grandmother proud. It is my duty to represent my family commendably and I know that reaching a high level in education is essential to do so.
