Hey guys, so I just finished my junior year in high school and I still haven't made any college visits. Yeah I know I'm a little behind. Anyway, I was wondering if you could give me an idea of what your visits were like and tell me how it helped you make your decision. I just want to know what I should look for in a college when I make the visit.

I've been making visits the past couple of weeks and I have to say that more than anything, just going to a lot helped me figure out what to look for. I mean, listen to their talks on the tours and compare them. For example, some colleges I went to would be bragging about things that the other colleges all had and took for granted. The biggest problem I've run into with college visits is that a lot of your impression comes from the tour guide, depending on how well informed and how personable he/she is. Another recommendation I would give is that if you're going while students are on campus (or even if not) try and watch the students and faculty. Watch how they treat one another- not just how they treat you. That'll give you a better feel for the actual atmosphere of the college. I think a lot of what's NOT on the tour is more important than the tour itself. But also pay attention to the tour- look at the dorms, find out if the bathrooms are community or suite if you have a preference, see how big they are, how much storage space they have. You're going to have to live here so make sure you're comfortable!

I agree with what Robynbird said. Mostly, just let your feelings be. Don't try to talk yourself into liking a school. When you go on campus, you'll either love it, or you won't.

If you don't love a school, know that there are almost 3,000 colleges in the US alone. You will find one you like. Just be willing to keep looking. :)

As for my experience, I thought I would prefer a small, private school. I toured one and hated it though; it simply wasn't for me. Then I got on the campus of a huge public school in an urban environment, and absolutely loved it. The school is very involved in community service, too, which was important to me.

I'm starting there this fall, and couldn't be happier. :) Good luck with your search!
