It was late Sunday afternoon. I had just parked my car in the church lot and started drifting towards the entrance of the building. As I walk to the door, I notice my friend, Kelsey, and her sister standing at the far end of the parking lot beside the fence that separates us from the railroad tracks. I decide to venture over to her to see why she hadn’t gone into church yet. As I get closer, I notice Kelsey and her sister are looking at something over the fence. Just as I am about to say hi, I hear Kelsey scream, “I hate my life!” At that point, I was curious as to why she felt that way. Then the truth came out.[>:]
Kelsey’s sister, not being the most graceful person, was told by Kelsey to catch her car keys when she threw them to her. As the keys slipped threw her fingers, they managed to squeeze through a tiny hole in the fence. We stood there, in awe of what just happened, staring at her keys not even two feet away from us. As easy as it was going to be to retrieve them, it might as well have been two miles. There the keys sat, almost smiling as if they knew what we were about ready to go through to bring them back to our side.[:'(]
Kelsey makes the first move. I volunteer to go, but she insisted on her doing the dangerous work. As she steps in the first ring of the fence, she grabs onto it and climbs ungracefully to the top. In the process of swinging her leg over, she loses her balance and pummels face first into the solid ground. As she regains her consciousness, she begins searching for the devilish object that caused her fall. When she reclaimed her keys, she noticed the ground seemed to be a little lower on her side, making it more difficult for her to get back over. Just as she was about to try and climb the massive fence again, I noticed a large cement block she could balance on to step to the other side. Unfortunately, the block was not as big as I anticipated. As the next few minutes drug by, we thought of many ways to use the block, but they all seemed to fail.[:@]
As Kelsey grew more and more frustrated, she finally gave up and decided she would have to go through the pain of climbing the fence once more. Just as she was about to swing her leg over, a close friend of ours named Tony came to investigate the dilemma. Thinking he was going to help, he instead takes out his camera phone and snaps a picture of Kelsey straddling the fence. After much laughter, he finally decided to give her a hand and lift her off the fence onto the ground. [:D]
A few hours passed, and though it was frustrating at the time, we began to laugh at the memory as we shared it with others. But as we were telling my family about the incident, my dad interrupts. He, being the building and grounds operator, obviously knew more about the land than three inexperienced teenagers. The comment he gave us left us with a feeling of stupidity and embarrassment. Just as Kelsey was describing the horror about trying to get back over the fence, my dad cuts her short and asks, “Well, why didn’t you just use the gate?”[8D]
