Okay, so this is probably a common topic, this underage drinking that is always partnered with driving, and we all know someone who does it. But I'm glad to say that I have a couple of best friends who have taken a stand in their own lives to do away with this horrible habit. Both of them have a parent or siblings who drink. I, like them, have two siblings that drink.
So, what's the big deal?
It's been almost a year since my brother had been in that accident. He was with an older friend and they had both been at a restaurant/bar drinking in celebration of another friend's birthday. And, since it was his friend's birthday, there was also a surprise party out at his house. This house was, at least, ten miles out of town, half of which was driven on dirt roads.
Since my brother and that friend had to beat the birthday friend and his wife home, they took to the dirt roads at a great speed. Not a very good combination when you are drunk.
Halfway down this first road, my brother's friend lost control of the pickup and rolled it. I still can't imagine what went through my brother's mind as the pickup took to the air and went upside down with them in it.
All the details are still hazy from the incident, but what is known is that my brother lost his best friend that night. All because his friend was drunk.
So, maybe it makes sense now, as to why you shouldn't underage drink. Many people think that I'll never drink and drive. But so many of teens these days believe that they are invincible, like Superman. Dirt roads are nothing when your drunk, nothing changes, especially when you have driven those roads all your life.
Just keep this in mind the next time someone offers you a beer. Just remember the agony someone can go through by losing a loved all because you or someone else was drunk. You may think that you are invincible, but the other people on that road are not.
Just Don't Drink Alcohol. And especially, Don't Drive Intoxicated!
