On the subject of the death penalty, one has two possible viewpoints to consider: The death penalty is wrong and should be abolished, or the death penalty is necessary to maintain a certain order in society regarding crime and punishment. My personal opinion is that the death penalty is wholly immoral and wrong, as I believe what it stands for completely contradicts the idea of human life as well my personal feelings. The biggest foundation for my argument bases itself upon the idea of human dignity. I believe that under any circumstance, no matter how terrible it may seem in the eyes of the judgemental public, humans do not have the right to play God and make a death-sentencing decision. When regarding human life, no matter how troubled and mislead, I believe it is essential to understand that as humans we reach too far in analyzing the validity of death upon someone. If not convinced on the prospect of inner dignity, one must also consider that there is far too much room for error in regard to the factors that decide upon a death sentence. (The system currently at hand is completely vulnerable to such possibilities.) Such factors include legal representation, where the crime was comitted, racial influence, and the simple notion that an innocent man or woman could be sentenced to death and executed. Even if one believed that death sentence is meritable for someone who has comitted a heinous crime, how are we supposed to get around the simple fact that our judicial system is far from perfect. Every year, innocent people are persecuted and punished for crimes they did not commit. The most extreme situation would be one where a person was sentenced to death for a crime they did not commit. In recent years those who have been found innocent after an extended period of imprisonment have been released from jail and declared innocent in regard to their accused crime. Death is something permanent that cannot be taken back, even though such a scenario is just as viable and possible. Death may be a serviceable consequence for those who merit it, but the system that decides that merit is not without flaw. In the end, it is not okay to sacrifice a few innocent lives for the sake of a more larger cause. The death penalty should be looked down upon and abolished, as it leaves our human dignity tainted and destroys the most hard to accept virtue of forgiveness in our world today.
