Cruising his car down the quiet, empty road,
A relaxed black man suddenly sees a policeman on patrol,
Slowing down his car so he won't be stopped for speeding,
the young black man remembers the times he'd been stopped for supposedly exceeding,
a speed limit he'd obeyed and gotten nine warnings for,
and this time he knew another warning was in store.
The man wondered, “Is it always this way when blacks are around?”
But at the same time another incident was happening in town.
A convenient store was being robbed by a white man in a ski mask.
Holding a gun, the white man completed his task.
Now he could hop in the car and escape from being caught,
but later a white man just happened to be stopped.
When a black policeman walked up to the car,
The man said, “Does my being white happen to play any part?”
And at the same time another incident was happening in town.
A white woman was hoping for a promotion and she found,
she would not get the job in this male-dominated law firm,
which made her ask her boss, “Is my being a woman one of your concerns?”
And at the same time a Hispanic man was looking for work,
During an interview the boss said he'd give him a job with many perks,
It comes with medical insurance and dental aid so life would be sealed,
“The perfect job I have is a job in the corn field.”
“You think because I'm Hispanic I should work outside,
and that the qualifications on my application were all lies?”
And at the same time an Asian girl was in a public library with books in her hands,
When a guy came to her and said something she'd heard from every man,
“Wow! You must be smart!” he said to the young girl,
But instead of a “thank you,” the Asian girl whirled,
into a ball of anger and suddenly she said,
“Just because I'm Asian doesn't mean I have the smartest head!”
And at the same time the policeman says to the young, black man,
“You're getting a ticket for being twelve miles per hour past the speed limit of this land.”
And at the same time the black policeman says to the white male,
“This car is stolen, and you're under arrest for the robbery of a convenient store. So, you're going to jail!”
And at the same time the boss tells the white woman defensively,
that the person who got the promotion was a more qualified someone,
who happens to be a woman.
And at the same time the boss tells the Hispanic,
that the only job available is the cornfield job and he should not panic.
And at the same time the man tells the Asian,
that he was not being a sarcastic Caucasian,
But instead he saw the shirt she had on,
which was the school she was attending, it read “Princeton.”
So the Black, White, the Woman, Hispanic and Asian,
all used the “race card” during each occasion,
Is race or gender an excuse that people abuse?
Or are their claims of racism justified?
