Ask yourself this question. What do I see when I look at America? What do the American people portray themselves as to you? Does it not all seem so superficial? America has lost depth, in a sense that we have become so wrapped up in consumerism that we tend to completely lose the meaning and point of life itself. This has turned our country into a race between individuals to see who can get the biggest, the best, and of course, the most expensive. American ideology has become completely warped from the original meaningful idea of "Freedom for all", into "The American dream", which consists of a wealthy executive businessman with a "hot" wife, two children (a boy and a girl), he has a sports car, and of course the pool in the back of his multi story house. There's nothing wrong with being a rich executive and having all that "stuff", but to me that shouldn't be what epidimizes America. What does being rich and having lots of expensive "stuff" have to do with being successful? I've known blue collar workers that were some of the happiest people in the world. Being a white collar worker is not a crime, though, and I would actually encourage it, however, making money and having a great career should not be what runs our lives. Instead we need to be focusing on things that really matter and give meaning to our lives such as our families and friendships. Work is only a means to support ourselves and our families. It should not be what defines us as individuals. Success in domestic life will bring far greater happiness and joy than success in the business world, and to use the coloquialism "You can take that to the bank."
We as teens need to take this into consideration whenever we are considering what colleges to go to and what career fields we'll go into as well. Instead of choosing a career because it will give the most money or fame we need to instead choose a career from individual values that we've made for ourselves. I encourage you to set aside the superficial and fight for what really matters in life. We are the upcoming generation, and our individual choices can change America. I have faith that our generation can bring America back from our current meaningless ideology into a new America where we focus on what really matters. So, what do you see when you look at America? I see a new America in the future, where consumerism has become what it is; meaningless. However, I can't answer that question for you. You have to answer it for yourself.
