Question of the week:

Seniors: if you could change one thing about how you've planned for college, what would it be?

What advice do you have for underclassmen about college planning?

  • Use your summers wisely.
  • Try not to fail any classes and keep your GPA up from the get-go. These will affect the classes you take for the rest of your time in high school.
  • Work or volunteer experience is very rewarding and will look great on your resume/application.
  • Practice writing essays.
  • Start looking and applying for scholarships as early as your Junior year.
  • Research prospective colleges as early as your Junior year as well.
  • Take the SATS/ACT for he first time in your Junior year so you have plenty of time to retake them your senior year if need be.
  • Save money for college application fees and SAT/ACT registration fees.
  • Keep a calendar of all important dates and deadlines. (This has helped me the most by far! I use Google's calendar that comes with my Google account for this. It's easy to add/edit/delete events and you can set up notifications and tons more.)[/ol]Very useful sites (I promise):
    [link=http://www.snagajob.com]http://www.snagajob.com[/link] - For jobs.
    [link=http://www.fastweb.com]http://www.fastweb.com[/link] - For scholarships.
    [link=http://www.volunteermatch.com]http://www.volunteermatch.com[/link] - For volunteering.
    http://www.google.com/calendar - For keeping track of deadlines and staying organized.

    If you need any help navigating these sites and using them to your advantage, just ask. :)

    I'll probably have more to add soon. :] These are all things I've learned through experience. I don't want anyone to end up crunching everything into their senior year like I did.

    The only thing I would change would be for me to have done more volunteer work around the community. Also, aside from that my advice is:

    1. Keep your GPA up. Dont try your junior or senior year to finally start applying yourself.
    2. Join clubs as a freshman. (Again, dont wait until the last minute and cram clubs into your senior year)
    3. Begin your college/scholarship search as soon as possible.
    4. Take the SAT's seriously. Your first time shouldnt just be a "practice round."
