My Own Prince Charming
L-o-v-e. These letters make me come to reality in an instant. Love used to be an illusion to me. It sounded like fairy tales, were there was always a prince charming and it ended happily ever after. I didn’t think that I would find love at the age of fifteen, but eventually at some time I would start to grow up. Love can find you or you can find love in the most unexpected places and conditions. In my story love found me.
It was the year 2004 and my freshman year in high school. My mother always said that my high school years would be full of surprises and unforgettable. I didn’t think this would fit me because I wasn’t popular nor was I, as they say, a nerd. I dressed common, was interested in school, and had a many friends. I liked go out to dances, parties, basically anywhere I could get to. Since I was a freshman you could say I was pretty immature. I liked doing everything that everyone else did.
The internet and e-mailing was, and still is, pretty popular these days. I was always checking and hoping I had e-mails. On one particular day, I received an e-mail from a guy named “Mike”. The e-mail read as follows:
“Hi,
I’m “Mike” and I go here to school with you. You don’t know me but I have seen you here around school. I’m a senior this year and I really think you’re pretty. I sure would like to get to know you better.”
It was a strange e-mail that I put aside and didn’t think much of. From then on I received frequently e-mails from “Mike”. He would send me beautiful poems or at times just say hi. This went on for quite awhile and after a month I really thought about meeting him.
I guess you could say it was weird going to the same school but never knowing or seeing him. He finally gathered the courage to come up to me one day. He showed up by my locker one day and this was what he said,” Hi, I’m “Mike” the one who has been e-mailing you all this time. I just wanted to let you know who I am.” After that he just said bye and left. Me, having natural girl instincts, thought he was very handsome. “Mike” looked like a serious guy and very respectful. Maybe one day we could be friends but nothing more than that.
As I said earlier I was a dancer and liked to go out. I also liked dressing the modern style. I liked to wear tank tops with mini skirts. The day of my birthday I went out to a dance with a bunch of my guy friends. These friends of mine always told me I was pretty but never disrespected me. Once in a while they put their arm around me but they never went farther than that. Well, at this dance one of them tried to untie my shirt. I never knew who it was. Being as ignorant and immature as I was I paid no attention to the incident and kept dressing the same way. After a while of dancing, I got tired and headed for the ladies restroom.
On my way “Mike” asked if he could walk me without really knowing were I was headed. I then told him only if he wanted to go to the ladies restroom. Afterwards we danced all night long and got to know each other better. Days passed when we would spend all day together talking about nothing in specific. My interest for him grew each day. I learned everything about him.
Then on November 2, 2004 he finally asked me to be his girlfriend. He came with a cuddly plush dog and popped the question. I was so excited and repeated over and over yes. There were only two conditions. One condition was to stop dressing the way I did and dress a little more covered up, show less skin. The second was to stop talking to my party guy friends. He knew about the shirt incident at the dance and wanted to prevent that kind of incident from ever happening again. His conditions hit me really hard and brought me straight back to reality.
He made me realize just how ignorant and immature I was. I accepted his conditions knowing he really changed me for the best. I now think back wondering what would have happened to me if I he hadn’t helped me change. Maybe one of my “friends” would have actually gone farther and tried to force me into doing something I didn’t want to. All this because I showed some skin and caused hungry looks from these supposed “friends”. I thank “Mike” for helping me change my wrongful ways and making me a better person.
We continue, to this day, being a couple. “Mike” is one great gentleman and really knows how to treat a lady. He would always bring me roses and repeats daily just how much he loves me. At times he would go a little crazy and sing romantic songs in my ear. On November 2, 2006 we will have two happy years together. Even though we have our ups and downs like everyone else, we know in our hearts that we found the meaning of love in each other.
Love can be very surprising when encountered, but it can also be a wonderful passageway to growing up. High school did bring me surprises and unforgettable memories just as my mother said. “Mike” was a surprising memory that will last a lifetime. He was part of a fairy tale that was waiting to be read. I guess you could say, that at the age of fifteen, I had found my prince charming.
