My High School did not help me at all with my college plans. If the seniors wanted information about scholarships or college related information we had to take time out of class to go search for it in the office - the problem with this is that the school gave us NO time. If anything they made it more frustrating for the seniors with constant assignments in no focus to our educations after High School. Our counselors, though we are assigned one, never really help us either. The largest thing my counselor did for me was to lend me an ACT prep CD. Which, due to my school's curriculum being behind in mathematics ( and my counselors once again putting me in the wrong math course without me knowing ) I did not pass. I got a 22 overall, and near perfects in every subject except math because the wrong classes got me behind ( I got a 17 ). How is it that I can pass college accredited AP courses yet not be capable of passing the ACT?
Now I have NO idea what to do because my family is definately not rich and paying for college is almost impossible ( though the FAFSA thinks so because they look at our income BEFORE taxes ). My family is enraged with me and they blame the lack of college funds on my actions - though my school has done near nothing to help me. I have applied on numerous scholarship websites but they haven't really helped either. Honestly I don't know where to begin because I am so frustrated with it all.
All I know is that I would've loved some help from a school counselor. I don't think that it is too much to ask of the school to actually attempt to help their students.
So, in the end, I have received NO scholarships ( though I have a 3.75 GPA, AP courses and am extremely involved ) and I do not know what to do. I don't even know what to major in because my school has yet to help me with that as well. They have given me no guideance whatsoever and I'll probably end up at some cheap college that I don't want to attend due to expenses.
Seriously, why is it that we as Americans place so much focus on education yet don't even have the means in HIGHSCHOOL to give students a suiteable education? If you look around, not all Highschools are fit to help their students ( for example: MINE ).
So where do I fit in? Have I worked for nothing just to end up somewhere I don't want to be because I'm not rich? If America is so fabulous why don't we start pouring funds into the education process instead of movie screens, television shows and marketing projects. Why don't we take the time to invest in our FUTURES education, because it isn't just me that has this problem, other students do too. And if the youth of today cannot afford the education they deserve ( yet a provocative musician gets the cash to expand her chest, a football player gets paid millions to throw a football yet there isn't enough cash out there to send a kid to college - how pathetic ) the future of American is down the drain.
As if it wasn't obvious that it's headed there already.
Anyway, this turned into some sort of rant spree. I felt like what I thought should be written though, and all opinions are welcome. I'd love any advice on what to do for college now since I've been put in a bind. If you're in the same situation I'd love your commentary as well. Thanks.
