The Accident
On a summer day, a few years ago, Jared and I went to play basketball at the park with some other people. Jared and I were very close friends. Whenever things got tough, we were always there for each other and always had each other’s back. We were the best duo ever.
We had spent the whole day playing hoops and it was very late, so we had to head back home. We congratulated our opponents for their hard work and skills, then headed home. While we were walking home, we saw someone getting mugged in the alley. Jared wanted to save the guy, but I tried to convince him the police would take care of it. He told me that he was going to help. He fought with the mugger until it happened. The mugger shot him. I stood watching, filled with fear, until the mugger left, then went to call the ambulance.
I waited for Jared to come out of the operating room until they came out and told me the news. Jared had taken a bullet to his spine and must live in a wheelchair. I was really shocked to hear this, and then I saw Jared come out in the wheelchair. I couldn’t believe my eyes, but from the look on his face, it didn’t seem to have affected him. I asked how he was feeling and if he was all right. He said that everything was all right. I kept apologizing to him, saying that it was my entire fault that he had ended up in the wheelchair. He kept telling me that everything was fine and that it wasn’t my fault.
After a few months, we had been getting along like we used to and then I thought, “Wow! Even if he’s in a wheelchair, he still is the same Jared I know and hang with. I should stop feeling bad for him and just treat him like I did in the old days.” I had finally woken up and realized that Jared and I are still the same duo we were months ago. After that, we lived exactly the way we had been all those days ago.
