I, Kyle Martin Joseph Brachen , am enrolled in Business – Human Resources Program at George Brown College (2012-2013).
2008 was a turning point in my life. My mother, two siblings and I emigrated from Qatar to Canada, hoping to improve our personal and economic situation. Our vision of Canada was of a land of opportunity; however these liberties have only come with time and effort.
My first year in Canada, adapting to a new culture and climate, was especially difficult. I got my first job at a local restaurant, while finishing my high school diploma. I was also pleased to be chosen as student council in high school. Student Council taught me how important it is to be a leader, and how to work effectively with people. After graduation, I decided to take a year off school, which turned into two, out of financial necessity, to make ends meet.
In my single parent household, my mother and I both need steady, stable jobs. My main concern for our family is the education of my younger siblings, especially my younger sister. In third world countries, the females don’t receive as much opportunity as the males. That’s why it is my main focus for my sister to receive an excellent level of education.
I am driven to succeed by making the best of opportunities available to me. Now as I seek to continue my education, I hope to create a brighter future for myself and my family. With hard work and perseverance I know I will succeed.
