so i guess you can kinda call this banter but my brain is seriously killing me from so much thinking. i'm from new mexico and i have some really big dreams. my dream school is NYU  haha  i recently took the ACT for the first time without studying and i got a 26. i'd like to raise that a few points. but my AES facilitator is basically telling me to give up on my dreams. and she's really starting to get to me. i feel like i can't do it. then i get scared wondering how i'll make it in another state without anyone i know. the easiest thing for me to do would be to go to UNM with all my tuition and fees paid, stay in an apartment w/ my friends, and keep my dog with me  but i really don't know what to do. help anyone?

First off, do not ever let anyone tell you to give up on your dreams. You can do what ever you put your mind to. Second, many kids when they go to college in another state are scared of what is out there. No matter if it is the state right next to yours or all the way on the other side of the country kids are opened to new experiences with many of people they don't know. It's okay to be scared of moving away from your safe haven for college but don't let that hold you back from doing it. Last, you can make new friends and always keep in touch with them and family (and your dog), however don't forget that there are many scholarships and other financial aid for kids out there. It is a tough time econically these days and many are staying in there home states for cheaper tution, yet if you really and definently want to go to NYU then you will and can make it possible. Just believe in yourself.

Hey, calm down. I know that it can be a little scary out there for anyone. It is true, if you put your mind to something, you can really achieve your dreams. You should never ever let someone else put your aspirations down. Do what you know will be your delight and something you enjoy. Always dream big and you will become successful!

I totally agree with the previos replys. NEVER LET SOMEONE TELL YOU CAN'T ACCOMPLISH YOUR DREAMS!!!!! There are people who have been rock bottom and now are CEOs. It's naturally to be scare, "without fear, you cannot be human"(hold on to that advice, very helpful). Never settle for less! When you apply to the school, ask how if there is a website or blog site hosted by the school's website...or even try facebook!!! Not the best but I been told its very helpful. Just have faith and pray.

You shouldn't totally give up yet. Just because she said that, doesn't mean you should stop where you're wanting to go. When it comes to college, there are really two roads, I guess: the first one is going wherever you want to go despite the costs, the distance, and anything else, but it's the school you want to go and the second one is going to a "safe" school. That's where you know the tuition would be a lot easier on you, it's probably closer to home, and it's easier to be accepted. A lot of students probably go through this. You should definitely apply to both and possibly a third choice, just in case. For my first choice in college, I didn't get accepted, but I told myself if I did, I would do despite not having enough money for it at all. I was accepted to my second choice, but wasn't willing to pay some of the costs, so in the end I went to my third choice with all of my tuition paid. I think that if you really, really want to get into your first choice, you're only thinking about going in. You're not really thinking about everything else. If you do get in, it's okay, I think you'll adapt. Thousands of students are moving away by themselves to another state or country to go where they want to go, even if they're moving away from their comfort zone. It's normal, and you will definitely get used to it.

Everybody here is right. Never, ever, ever, let anyone tell you what you are capable of. I have had to make some difficult decisions these past couple years (the biggest one being whether or not to drop out of the International Baccalaureate Program), and when it came down to it, I did what made me happy. So if NYU is truly where you want to go, do everything in your power to get there. Find the address (e-mail or regular) of the Admissions office and ask them what you need to do to make it. And yes, going to a new place on your own is one of the scariest things in the world, but it is a chance to prove to yourself and everyone around you that you can do it. College is all about experiences and discovering yourself, and most of all, getting out of your comfort zone.
Good luck!
