“Don’t worry, we’ll change you.” It seems like I hear that line just a little too much. Why are people so set on changing me? Is it my hair? Do they not like my clothes? Is there something wrong with my style? No. I don’t think anyone has a problem with any of those things. I’m pretty sure it’s my standard for living that people don’t like. To tell you the truth, I find it easier to understand why people would want to change my image than to try to comprehend why they would change my lifestyle. Think about it.
I’ve made a decision to stay drug and alcohol free. I choose abstinence until marriage. I don’t smoke or abuse my body in any other way, shape, or form (except for the occasional Mickey D’s order of fries). Basically, I choose a healthy, happy life. See, if I wore silk clothing and had a Napoleon Dynamite sort of composure, it would make sense that people would want to “fix” me…
…But I’m not broken. If someone can’t stay away from things that are harmful to them or things that they might one day regret, that’s them. Can anyone explain to me why someone who would call themselves my friend would want to bring me down with them? I guess it’s true that misery just loves company. Or maybe Billy Joel said it best when he said, “They’re sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it’s better than drinking alone.” You know, I’d have to agree with him. Nobody wants to drink alone. We’d all rather go down together (ok…ok…sorry for the bad pun).
“Don’t worry, we’ll change you.” I’ve been hearing that for so long now. I guess I find it sort of humorous…and sad. I mean, these kids spend their days getting high with friends and does it make them any happier? No, not really. Most of them spend their nights alone cutting themselves. Truthfully, I pity these people. I guess I don’t mind hearing “we’ll change you” because I know that there’s no way that is going to happen, but maybe there is some hope that I can change them. Maybe.
