Careers as a system security specialist

Find out the skills needed for a career as an information systems security specialist

Careers as a system security specialist

What they do:
Businesses, governments and individuals are reliant on technology to support their day-to-day activities. Unfortunately, the security of our digital information infrastructure is increasingly under siege by the growing number and sophistication of hackers, cyber-criminals and online terrorists.

In 2004, the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) released a report citing information security as the single greatest area of IT job growth over the next three to five years due to concerns over terrorism, homeland security and identity theft.

From someone who knows:
“As our society becomes more reliant on computers, new kinds of theft and fraud are being committed, and there is an increasing need for IT professionals with specialized training in identifying, evaluating and developing cost-effective responses to these potential threats,” says David Overbye, dean of curriculum for DeVry University.

Your next step:
Though this field is still emerging, the role of information security specialists within an organization is critical to its operations. Key competencies include the ability to identify threats, analyze the likelihood of a threat occurring, and to develop proactive responses. Specialists in this area also need to be well-versed in cyber-based regulatory policy.

High school students interested in information security careers can prepare now by taking math courses beyond algebra. Additionally, it is always good to develop teamwork and leadership abilities through professional clubs and associations, many of which have student chapters. Education-related work experience can also help a job candidate stand out.

College students should work closely with their school’s career services office to help build their résumés and their interviewing and negotiating skills. They should also attend career fairs to explore potential opportunities and to network. Information security is a fast-paced career opportunity for students who are interested in helping prevent and respond to identity theft and other cyber-crimes.
