NSM:What are the benefits of being an entrepreneur?
Herold: Freedom. You only go to the meetings you want and only do the work you want. And there is a lot of diversity in your day-to-day activities.
NSM:What are the drawbacks of being an entrepreneur?
Herold: There are no guarantees you’ll have the same job in the future. Your list of to-dos will never get done. And often, entrepreneurs are not as nice to ourselves as a boss could be!
NSM:Are entrepreneurs born or made?
Herold: I’ve been hard wired as an entrepreneur since birth; I’ve always been a dealmaker. However, my dad pushed me to think of and run companies ever since I was a teenager.
NSM:What are the traits that you see in successful entrepreneurs?
Herold: Successful entrepreneurs show leadership, are goal-oriented, tenacious, have sales skills, an ability to get tons done, and are positive.
NSM:What habits make you a successful entrepreneur?
Herold: You need the ability to focus, network, set and hit goals daily, and be comfortable turning to mentors.
NSM:What books do you recommend to an aspiring entrepreneur?
Herold: Read these five books—then don’t read any for three years and just get stuff done: E-Myth; Good To Great; Rockefeller Habits; One-Minute Manager; Atlas Shrugged.
NSM:What can a high school student do to learn more about being an entrepreneur?
Herold: Don’t study so much! Join clubs, get into sports, get into student government. No one will EVER ask to see your report cards once you get into a college or university.
