Score a job as a: sports marketer

You can thank a marketer for providing the events, insider updates and buzz that feeds your fan obsessions.

Geoffrey Cook, marketing coordinator for the Watkins Glen International (TheGlen.com), a historic road course that hosts drivers from NASCAR, IndyCar and Grand-Am, plans and promotes events for fans.

“You may be required to work long days for extended periods of time—anything it takes to put on a memorable experience for your fans and sponsors,” Cook says.

But when it all comes together, Cook says the long hours are worth it. Also a plus is the chance to meet the celebrities who also attend the events.

Want a career in sports marketing? Besides earning a bachelor’s degree (his is in sport management), Cook recommends getting experience through internships and part-time jobs.
