History

NextStepU MagazineThe NextStepU (NextStepU.com) helps students plan for college, careers and life. Magazine is a national publication for high school students that is distributed in 20,500 high schools in 50 states. The Next Step Magazine is headquartered in Rochester, N.Y., where the first issue was published May 17, 1995.

The NextStepU Magazine has been recognized for its achievements. In 2008, the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) named NextStepU Magazine a finalist in the "whole publication" category. In 2007, the magazine won AEP's "periodical of the year" title in the young adult category. AEP has previously awarded Next Step the following awards: "whole publication design" (2006), "most improved" (2006), finalist, "best educational portal" (2004), "most improved" (2003) and "best how-to article" (2002). In 2004, the magazine also won the Elmer Huff Award for Media Resources from the Ontario School Counsellors' Association.

The NextStepU encourages reader involvement. In 2009-10, we will choose a winner of our annual Win Free College Tuition (up to $10,000) contest, as well as conduct 11 monthly $1,000 drawings. Teens who win our bimonthly Shout Out Writing Contest earn $100 and get their pieces published in the magazine. And the annual Super Teen edition that recognizes outstanding students is a favorite among teachers, counselors and students. We aim to make a difference-and our readers tell us often that we do. We have a large, active teen advisory board that critiques and contributes to our products.

At NextStepU.com, students find several interactive tools to help them through the college-planning process. Our Step by Step college-planning timeline guides users through each to-do before college. The site also features a College Match tool, scholarship search, vibrant college-planning community and free handouts for school counselors.

We are very proud of The NextStepU's successes and constantly work to become an ever-better resource for college planning, career exploration and life skills.
